PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To install, repair, and maintain mechanical installations, machinery, and components with precision, ensuring optimal equipment performance, minimal downtime, and strict adherence to safety and engineering standards.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspect mechanical systems and equipment to identify defects, hazards, and repair needs, ensuring compliance with OHSA, SANAS, and SABS codes.
Maintain, repair, and overhaul mechanical equipment and fixtures.
Respond rapidly to breakdowns and execute efficient repairs to minimize production delays.
Perform scheduled maintenance and shutdown tasks with high accuracy and engineering excellence.
Plan tasks, organize workflow, and order necessary spares from main stores.
Be available for overtime, night shifts, and standby duties (callouts) as required.
Liaise with operators, production staff, and plant managers to ensure repairs and modifications meet operational needs.
Maintain all company tools in safe, good condition, ensure proper storage, and immediately report any damage to your supervisor.
Understand, apply, and enforce lock-out procedures without exception.
Assume the duties of the Mechanical Foreman when required.
Assist the Electrical Department with problem-solving when requested.
Supervise, instruct, and train assigned personnel, with special attention given to apprentice training.
Successfully complete any company-mandated training courses.
Operate forklifts and overhead cranes (valid licenses required).
Perform daily checks on hydraulic and gearbox oil levels and report leaks immediately.
Report all minor oil and air leaks promptly and facilitate repairs.
Undertake minor boiler-making and welding tasks for repairs and installations.
Assist production departments with blade changes on saws and guillotines.
REQUIREMENTS
Educational Requirements:
Minimum N3 qualification with at least one relevant mechanical subject.
A recognized and verifiable Fitter Trade Test Certificate.
Completion of a formal apprenticeship.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of post-trade test experience within a heavy industrial environment.
Licenses (Advantageous):
Valid forklift license.
Valid overhead crane operator license.
