How to Build a LinkedIn Profile That Actually Gets You Noticed

LinkedIn has become one of the most important tools for job seekers in South Africa, but simply having a profile isn't enough - recruiters are scanning hundreds of profiles, and small details can be the difference between being noticed and being scrolled past.

Start With a Clear, Professional Photo

Profiles with a clear, friendly headshot get significantly more views than those without one. You don't need a professional photographer - good lighting, a neutral background, and appropriate dress for your industry are enough.

Write a Headline That Says More Than Your Job Title

Instead of just listing your current job title, use the headline space to briefly communicate your specialty or what you're looking for - for example, "Finance Graduate | Seeking Opportunities in Bookkeeping & Payroll Administration" tells a recruiter far more than "Job Seeker" or your last job title alone.

Fill Out Your Experience With Specifics

Rather than listing only your job title and dates, briefly describe what you actually did and, where possible, any measurable outcomes - for example, "Managed stock levels for a 200-product retail store, reducing wastage by improving reorder timing." Specific details make your experience feel real and credible.

    Use the Skills Section Strategically

Add the specific skills relevant to the roles you're targeting, since recruiters often search LinkedIn using exact skill keywords. If you're not sure which skills to list, look at job postings you're interested in and note the specific terms they use repeatedly.

    Engage, Don't Just Exist

An active profile - commenting thoughtfully on industry posts, sharing relevant articles, or writing occasional updates about your own learning - signals to recruiters that you're engaged in your field, not just passively job hunting.

    Connect With Purpose

Rather than sending generic connection requests, a short personalised note explaining why you'd like to connect (a shared industry, a role you admire, a mutual interest) significantly increases both acceptance rates and the chance that connection leads somewhere useful.

A strong LinkedIn profile won't replace a good CV, but for many South African industries, it's increasingly the first thing a recruiter checks before they even open your application.
